Nothing is more final than death!
You act crazy not because you are bad, but because you have refused to embrace who you are in Christ.
Can you claim you haven’t done anything or thought about something crazy since you made Jesus your Lord?
Impossible.
We have all done things we ought not to do.
Does this stop us from being born again?
Will the crazy things you did as a Christian ever make the Lord cut you off?
No!
Yet this doesn’t mean you can go on making same mistakes over and over again.
You have to die to sin!
But how easy or hard is that?
Some have claimed that they die to sin daily.
Really? You die to sin daily?
The issue with sin is that you most likely have confused the word sin as a noun for sin as a verb.
Sin as a noun is a state of being. While sin as a verb is an action.
When you came into the world you had the nature of sin.
Every thing you did was influenced by who you were at that time.
You inherited this nature from Adam. And no matter how well you performed there was no way out of that nature.
Then one day you decided to follow Christ. At the point of confession, you entered His death. You died to sin.
You didn’t die to sin as a verb. Your death to sin was sin as a noun.
That means you died to the nature you inherited from Adam.
Yet you still do wrong. You still commit sin as an action. Weird things still happen in your life despite confessing Jesus Christ as your Lord.
This might confuse you sometimes, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
You can’t live in ignorance of what Jesus Christ did on the cross; and not fall into sin as an action.
So what happened on the cross? Why despite not wanting to sin do you still find yourself doing things you know you ought not to?
It is the flesh.
And if you are to die to sin as an action and live unto God, then you have to deal with the flesh.
Questions might be running through your mind at the moment.
You may claim to have done everything possible not do wrong and yet you still do it.
But what if I told you that you don’t have to either die to sin or to the flesh, will you believe me?
Your death to sin is a done deal. You also died to the flesh on the cross through Christ Jesus.
Instead of trying to do these things again, all you have to do is to recon yourself dead to sin indeed.
Greek is a beautiful language that paints more pictures of a word compared to English.
Reckon is Greek is the word Logizomai.
HELPs Word-Study describes it as logízomai (the root of the English terms “logic, logical“) – properly, compute, “take into account”; reckon (come to a “bottom-line”), i.e. reason to a logical conclusion (decision).
So if for example, I say I reckon I have a million dollars in my account. That means at the moment, a million dollars is in my account.
I am not trying to get it or am I believing God for it. Once I reckon that it is in my account, then it is in my account.
Likewise, when scripture says reckon yourself to be dead indeed to sin, it means in reality you are dead to sin.
You are not die to sin again because you are dead to sin at this very moment.
When you are ignorant of this truth you try to achieve what it already yours.
In Romans, the issue of sin was brutally addressed by the Apostle.
He made it very clear that you are either obeying sin unto death;
Or you are obeying obedience unto righteousness.
At first, this might seem confusing. What did he mean by saying you are obeying sin unto death?
In Romans 5 the apostle stated that it was by Adam’s sin that we all became guilty before God.
So the problem wasn’t our sin as an action. It was sin inherited as nature.
And the fruit of that sin was death.
It resulted in a separation from God. People lived without God and did hideous things.
Some tried to find a way to God. But it was not possible because of the nature of sin we all inherited.
This necessitated the Father to send His Son to die for your sin.
Notice that sin that our Lord Jesus Christ died for wasn’t as an action. It was Sin as nature.
After His death on the cross you became dead to sin once for all time.
The Apostle went further to say – you are the servant of whom you obey.
So you are either obeying what Adam did and continue to bear fruit unto death.
Or you are obeying Jesus Christ’s obedience and yielding the fruit of righteousness.
Which one do you find yourself doing at the moment?
If sin as an action still has dominion over you then you have not received the gift of grace that comes through Christ Jesus.
For sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under the Law but under Grace. Romans 6:14
What then can you do to die to sin as an action?
Start by yielding to the Holy Spirit.
The apostle Paul made it clear that if you live by the flesh, you have to die. And if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body you will live.
Notice the distinction between “Flesh” and “Body”
The flesh is the Adamic nature. You have to die to it. Guess what? You are dead to it already through Christ Jesus.
Now your body have cravings and desires that are influenced by your 5 senses.
When you smell nice food your body longs for it. That doesn’t mean you eat everything that smells nice.
Likewise when you see nice things you buy them. It also doesn’t mean you buy everything you see.
The point is your body will have desires you have to say no to.
So if you are a believer and you are unmarried, it is normal for your body to desire sex.
And we know that the body is not for fornication but for the Lord.
Even for the married believers, your body might suggest an affair with another woman.
So the way to keep the body in check is through the Spirit of God that dwells in you.
Does this then mean that you will never make a mistake? No!
We all make stupid and senseless mistakes even as Christians.
The point then is that you have to learn to follow the Holy Spirit.
Your flesh sometimes will try to take over you and suggest stupid things to you. Most times you will say no successfully. And at other times you might make a mistake.
The flesh doesn’t succeed until you succumb continuously to it. So even when a mistake happens, learn to go back to the Spirit and depend on Him.
Understanding and heeding to His leading will help you mortify the deeds and deadly craving of the flesh.
Therefore instead of hustling to die to sin, remind yourself daily that you are dead to sin.
It is not about what you can or cannot to do to die to sin. You have to wake up to what our Lord and master already did on the cross on your behalf.
What then can you at the moment to address some of the crazy things you do?
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” Romans 10:10-11
Remember that I mentioned earlier that obeying the obedience of Christ results to righteousness?
Righteousness means a right standing with God. It means having a clear conscience when you approach God.
And going by the way you have behaved for a while you know you can’t claim to be righteous.
But there is another kind of righteousness that gives you a permanent right standing with God.
It is the righteousness of Christ. How then do you get this righteousness? What must you do?
You will agree with me that at every point in your life you want to be sure your standing with God is guaranteed.
What then must you do?
Nothing!
Absolutely nothing!
You have the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus as a gift.
Christ bequeathed this gift to you the day you confessed Him as Lord. That same day He solved the sin problem in your life. You can forever stand before the Father as if you have and will never sin.
This is all because of the gift of righteousness made available by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Now you understand why you can’t die to sin more than once.
This was the same kind of righteousness that Abraham had. He believed. God declared Him righteous.
Abraham made mistakes. His mistake didn’t take away His righteousness. Because His behavior didn’t earn him the righteous stand.
Likewise, when you believe, you have the righteousness of Christ Jesus as a gift.
Your behavior didn’t get it for you. Neither will your mistakes take it away.
Guess what the apostle says is the fruit of righteousness?
Holiness!
If you believe and consistently confess your righteousness in Christ, you will wake up one day and all your destructive habits will be gone.
So confess your righteous stand in Christ as if your life depends on it.
Because your life depends on all that His righteousness can produce for you.
