But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
1 Corinthians 1:30 NASB
The emphasis on righteous living in churches is not commensurate to the results.
Righteousness is a key word in most teachings yet it seems the congregation is not getting it.
Living a righteous life is important.
In addition, becoming righteous is not about what you do but what you believe.
Hearing that for the first time?
I will reiterate to make sure it is clear to you.
Righteousness is not about what you do… it is about what you believe.
In the old covenant, your works made you righteous.
If you obeyed all commandment, you are righteous. However, if you disobeyed, punishment followed.
It is different in the new covenant. You are not righteous because of you do. You are righteous because you believe in Christ.
Here is what I mean…
Righteousness does not come by doing.
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Righteousness is a noun.
Under the New-Covenant, it is a man. His name is Jesus Christ
For you to become righteous you must believe in this man.
It is not about what you can or cannot do, rather it is dependent on what you believe.
Righteousness is a gift.
It is not something you work to get. All you have to do to be righteous is to be believe in Jesus Christ.
I am repeating this to emphasize the importance of the new covenant. It all depends on Jesus Christ’s finished work.
In the same token, you cannot lose your righteousness because of what you do.
Paul’s heart, as is the Holy Spirit, is for all to receive salvation in Christ…
After salvation, your walk depends on what you believe about your stand with God.
The Israelites confused the righteousness of God as something they could earn. They expected God to bless them based on their performance.
However, God wanted them to receive His righteousness that comes through His Son Jesus Christ.
The Israelite’s missed the righteousness of God by trying to keep their own righteousness.
The reason being they went about it without faith… Romans 10:2-4
They wanted God to continue judging them by the results they were able to produce.
Are you still comparing yourself with the people that lived in the Old Testament?
Desist from trying to earn God’s favor and kindness by what you can or cannot do. It all depends on the finished work of Jesus Christ.
How this applies to you.
You will miss the righteousness of God if you want God to bless you based on your performance.
The righteousness of the New Testament believer is not about doing…
It is about speaking.
This means you must continue to say you are righteous even if you are not getting the results now.
You serve a God that calls things that be not as though they were…
Thus, fruits of righteousness will manifest as you continue to confess it over your life.
Desist from the mindset of doing things to be righteous…
…believe that you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
Trying to become righteous does not make you righteous.
It is an aberration for you as a child of God to strive to become righteous.
How in the world should you continue to strive for what is already yours?
The righteousness that I am writing about today is the righteousness that comes by faith.
Trying to get it by what you can do means you have already missed the first step in becoming righteous.
You won’t become more righteous than you already are at the moment, you only become more aware of it with time.
And to become more aware of it, you must have it in your mouth.
Continue to confess that you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
God sees you as righteous and you must see yourself the same way because of Jesus Christ.
Know the difference between becoming righteous under both covenants.
Misunderstanding the old and new covenant confuses what it means to be righteous.
In the Old-Covenant you are righteous based on how well you perform.
If you keep the laws and the commandment of God you are righteous…
But when you fail in keeping the commandment, punishment followed.
It is sad to say that such doctrine is being preached today under the new covenant.
But it is not true that God punishes you when you make mistakes under the new covenant…
Because Jesus who knew no sin, did no sin and neither was sin found in his mouth…
Became sin so that you who have never done any act of righteousness will become righteous.
This is the truth. The divine exchange that happened on the cross stands in your favor today.
You don’t have to try to establish your righteousness with God. Believe in Jesus Christ and you are righteous.
You won’t succeed at becoming righteous by your efforts because the Israelites didn’t either
I cringe when I hear people say they are trying to become righteous…
You have to desist from the acts of trying to be righteous by what you do.
Stop trying to be righteous. Start receiving the righteousness that is already yours in Christ Jesus.
The Israelites tried but they failed…
In fact, their failure was the result of the provisions in Christ.
After His manifestation, crucifixion, and ascension…
They continued to keep the same kind of righteousness they had before he came… and they missed it.
Do not be like them in trying to work for what is already yours in Christ.
Believe me; at the start, this would seem hard…
However, do not try to figure this out with your head; instead, believe it in your heart…
Not because I said it but because the word of God emphasizes this point.
You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
Sin does destroy your righteous stand with God.
I have made one point known so far…
When you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, you become righteous by default.
It does not matter if you feel like it or not…
The truth is you are already righteous in Jesus.
It belongs to you and using it to your advantage is the best you can do for yourself as you begin to grow.
Remember growing results in making mistakes sometimes.
You need the claim of being the righteousness God in Christ Jesus when you make mistakes. That is when it matters.
The enemy will try to keep you defeated by suggesting you have lost your righteousness when you sin.
You must not accept this lie. The Lord knows you will make mistakes.
This is the reason His sacrifice on the cross covers all the sins of your lifetime.
You are righteous because you believe in Jesus.
To continue being righteous depends on him and not on what you can or cannot do.
Sin does not make you lose your righteous stand with God.
Don’t compare yourself with old testament believers.
God punished King David because he lived under the law.
You did not become righteous because of what you did. What you do cannot take away God’s righteousness.
You must desist from all efforts to establish your righteousness. It will frustrate you in the end.
All you have to do is to believe in the provision of God for you. Once you receive the gift through Christ, God sees you righteous.
If God has made Jesus your righteousness, it is wise you receive God’s provision for you.
